Cecile Derkatch

ARTIST'S PROFILE

Picture
Cecile was born, raised and educated in Alberta.  Edmonton and Sherwood Park were her home for many years until she moved and retired to the Okanagan in 2007.

She developed a passion for art at an early age and therefore was encouraged by her family and teachers to pursue her artistic talents. Her art education consisted of four years at the University of Alberta Extension, where she completed all the required courses in painting, drawing and design. To further her studies in personal art development, she spent another four years at a private art school in Edmonton. Her mentor, Eileen Raucher Sutton, greatly influenced her work for those years. After graduating from Sutton Art, she participated in many workshops and seminars with notable Canadian and American artists.

Cecile now works out of her Peak Point Studio Loft in West Kelowna, BC.
"I try to strive for the qualities necessary to guide the viewer’s eye through the work by concerning myself with the rhythm and flow of pattern and with the abstract design, which I find are essential to the foundation of a forceful piece.  In order to give importance to the center of interest, I study the positive and negative shapes for impact and position the lights and darks throughout the works.

I feel that there is an art to the way life is viewed.  I truly believe that by thinking creatively and with a positive attitude, I can achieve that quality in my work and in my life."

ART AFFILIATIONS
Cecile has been affiliated with various art groups for many years,  The Art Society of Strathcona County in Sherwood Park,  The Wecan Artists Association in Edmonton, The Celebration of Women in the Arts in Alberta, The Centre d'Art Visuels de l’Alberta and The Society of Western Canadian Artists in Edmonton where she attained Associate member (ASWCA) status.  She was also a docent for the Edmonton Art Gallery for many years and on the Board of Directors for Festival Place Cultural Foundation for eight years. She is now a member of the Federation of Canadian Artist in Kelowna where she is currently the Vice President, The Peachland Art Group, and very recently, West Kelowna Brushstrokes Club, of which she is a founding member.  She has recently joined S.W.C.A. in West Kelowna and has become a partner in Gallery 97 Artworks in Peachland.

She has taught art classes for many years at the Muttart Conservatory in Edmonton and in local galleries in Edmonton and Sherwood Park.  She also had a teaching studio in Sherwood Park, conducting daily art classes and workshops for 15 years.
